Organization: Arc Communications (B2B Telecom & Technology Provider, Nottingham, UK)    My Role: Marketing Analyst Consultant   (Postgraduate Project student) Project Period: May – August 2026    Focus: Digital Audit, SEO/CRO Optimization, STP Strategy, & Paid Search Rationalization    Core Frameworks: SOSTAC, STP, Competitor Benchmarking, Website/SEO Audit, PPC Keyword Analysis, AIDA

Executive Summary

Arc Communications entered this consultancy engagement with an established market presence, serving over 6,000 customers and managing 40,000+ connected devices with an exceptional 97% customer retention rate. However, despite strong operational service delivery and dedicated account management, new customer acquisition relied heavily on traditional direct sales and fragmented digital channels.

As Marketing Analyst Consultant, I led the digital diagnostic and keyword audit workstream. I reframed the client's initial brief from a generic request for "more marketing" into a strategic imperative: building a focused, differentiated, and digitally scalable customer acquisition system that complements Arc's relationship-led sales model.

By combining technical SEO diagnostics, Google Ads bid analysis, and competitor benchmarking, I identified key growth bottlenecks and developed a cost-conscious, phased growth roadmap focused on high-value B2B segments.

The Commercial Problem

Arc’s core challenge was not a lack of customer value but a mismatch between delivered service quality and communicated digital value.

[ High Retention (97%) & Service Quality ] ── (Communication Gap) ──► [ Unfocused Acquisition & Conversion Friction ]
  1. Broad, Undifferentiated Targeting: Targeting "all SMEs" led to diluted messaging across a massive, heterogeneous UK business landscape.

  2. Digital Discoverability & Conversion Barriers: Technical website defects suppressed organic search visibility and created unnecessary friction for mobile visitors.

  3. PPC Cost Exposure: Paid search keywords suffered from high-cost bidding risks without landing page experience alignment.

My Role & Diagnostic Methodology

As the Marketing Analyst Consultant within the consultancy team, my focus was providing analytical rigour across digital touchpoints and connecting evidence to commercial strategy.

Navigating Research Limitations: The Methodological Pivot

When a primary customer survey yielded zero responses, I pivoted the research design from primary validation to a secondary-data triangulation model:

  • Client & Operational Discovery: Analyzed historical customer profiles and retention data.

  • Technical Website Audit: Evaluated indexability, metadata, heading structures, mobile performance, and conversion funnels across all 14 site pages.

  • Google Ads Keyword Planner: Audited search volumes, competitiveness, and bid ranges across direct and alternative product terms.

  • Competitor Digital Intelligence: Benchmarked competitor landing pages, sector specialisations, educational content, and call-to-action (CTA) pathways.

Key Diagnostic Findings & Strategic Interpretation

Finding 1: Broad "SME" Targeting Weakened Acquisition Efficiency

Targeting generic SMEs treated vastly different businesses as a single audience. This administrative grouping caused message dilution and made paid acquisition campaigns difficult to optimize.

Finding 2: Professional Services as a High-Value Growth Hypothesis

Analysis revealed strong adoption of AI transcription and secure communication tools among legal, accountancy, and consultancy practices. Prioritizing professional services provided a testable, high-margin target segment whose reliance on client trust aligned with Arc's service strengths.

Finding 3: Technical SEO and Conversion Friction On-Site

The technical audit uncovered several critical discoverability and user-experience issues:

Audit Metric / Area

Observed Diagnostic Finding DOCX

Commercial Risk DOCX

Priority Fix DOCX

Page Indexability

Core "Business Mobile Phones" page was unindexed.

Key service page completely invisible to organic search.

Correct crawl/index directives in robots.txt / canonicals.

Meta Descriptions

100% of audited site pages lacked meta descriptions.

Low click-through rates (CTR) from search engine results pages.

Author unique, intent-driven meta descriptions across all pages.

Heading Structure

Inconsistent page titles and H1 tags across pages.

Diluted page relevance signals for search engines and users.

Standardise to one descriptive H1 per product page.

Mobile Experience

Page weight and loading speed bottlenecks on mobile devices.

High bounce rate among mobile users (>90% of lead conversions).

Compress image assets and optimize Core Web Vitals.

Conversion Pathways

Only 3 product pages contained business inquiry forms.

High-intent traffic had no immediate path to convert.

Deploy service-specific CTAs and simplified lead forms.

Finding 4: PPC Bid Optimization vs. Keyword Cost Exposure

A search audit revealed extreme cost variances in Google Ads keywords:

[ High-Cost Broad Keywords ] ──► "business leased line" (£24.36 – £70.45 / click)
[ Low-Cost Intent Keywords ] ──► "business phone service provider" (£0.10 – £0.23 / click)
  • High-intent, broad category terms like "business leased line" showed top-of-page bids between £24.36 and £70.45.

  • Product-aligned long-tail terms presented cost-effective test opportunities, such as "business phone service provider" (£0.10 – £0.23) and "hosted ip phone system" (£0.16 – £0.37).

Strategic Recommendations & Implementation Roadmap

I engineered a sequenced strategy where target-market clarity and website conversion fixes precede scaling media spend.

Phase 1: Foundations (Weeks 0-4) ──► Phase 2: Content & SEO (Weeks 4-8) ──► Phase 3: Paid Scaling (Weeks 8-12)

1. Niche Positioning in Professional Services

  • Focus primary acquisition campaigns on law firms, accountancy practices, and consultancies.

  • Develop sector-specific landing pages highlighting communication reliability, uptime SLAs, and compliance.

2. Website & Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO)

  • Resolve technical SEO bottlenecks (indexability, H1 tags, meta descriptions).

  • Build dedicated conversion pathways and FAQs tailored to specific buyer pain points.

3. Disciplined, High-Intent PPC Testing

  • Reallocate budget toward lower-cost, long-tail search terms.

  • Enforce negative keyword lists and align ads directly with service landing pages to maximise Quality Score and reduce Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC).

4. Coordinated LinkedIn & Email Nurturing

  • Connect social outreach and email marketing into a single content calendar addressing sector-specific operational challenges.

Proposed Measurement Architecture

To ensure post-implementation accountability, I recommended establishing a full-funnel measurement framework:

$$\text{Traffic (GA4)} \longrightarrow \text{Engaged Sessions} \longrightarrow \text{Qualified Leads (CRM)} \longrightarrow \text{Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)}$$

  • GA4 Custom Events: Track form starts, click-to-call triggers, and resource downloads.

  • CRM Attribution: Link Google Ads and LinkedIn campaigns directly to downstream closed revenue.

  • Commercial Unit Economics: Evaluate Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) against CAC by segment.

Leadership Takeaways & Consultancy Reflection

  • From Technical Audits to Systems Thinking: Technical SEO issues are rarely isolated web bugs; they are often symptoms of unaligned positioning and unclear value propositions.

  • Pivoting Under Methodological Constraints: When primary data collection fails, establishing a rigorous secondary triangulation model maintains decision-grade analytical value.

  • Case-Study Integrity: True consultancy value lies in distinguishing between diagnostic facts, proposed hypotheses, and verified post-implementation results.
