Executive Summary
As postgraduate marketing and data analytics students at Nottingham Business School, my team participated in the ByteForge White Paper Challenge - a pilot knowledge-exchange initiative funded by the Institute for Knowledge Exchange Practice and piloted by Dr. Rotimi Olaniyan. The challenge tasked student teams with bridging academic research and industry practice to produce high-impact thought leadership.
Collaborating under the direct mentorship of Tom Snee (Director at Cartwright Communications) and academic supervisor Kai Zhu, our team developed the winning white paper, “Place Marketing in a Digital World". The paper examined how digital technologies, data analytics, and omnichannel strategies can revolutionise destination branding and regional economic promotion. Our work secured 1st place in the competition, leading to publication by project partners and an invitation to an exclusive hands-on digital marketing and analytics workshop at Cartwright’s Nottingham offices.

The Strategic Challenge & Project Intent
Modern place marketing (cities, regions, economic hubs, and destinations) faces significant digital transformation hurdles. Traditional destination promotion relies heavily on static branding and fragmented campaign advertising, failing to leverage real-time digital engagement signals, localised sentiment tracking, and data-driven storytelling.

Deliver Actionable Thought Leadership: Produce a publication-grade white paper offering scalable frameworks for regional destination marketers.
Industry-Academic Methodology & Mentorship
The project operated as a collaborative knowledge-exchange initiative, combining academic rigor with commercial agency execution:
Agency Mentorship (Cartwright): Worked with Tom Snee, Director at Cartwright—a leading PR and communications agency—to validate commercial applicability and industry relevance.
Academic Guidance (NBS): Partnered with Kai Zhu to maintain research validity, structured literature synthesis, and methodological rigour.
Data & Digital Synthesis: Synthesised consumer trends, social listening practices, digital touchpoint mapping, and regional identity frameworks to structure our place marketing model.
Core Findings & White Paper Framework
Our winning paper, “Place Marketing in a Digital World,” established three primary strategic pillars for modern place branding:
Strategic Pillar | Core Concept | Digital Application |

Omnichannel Ecosystems | Integrating physical infrastructure with digital discovery channels. | Utilizing geotargeted content, interactive mobile itineraries, and localized digital touchpoints |
Stakeholder Co-Creation | Involving local residents, businesses, and visitors as brand advocates. | Harnessing user-generated content (UGC), digital community forums, and local business networks. |
