Organization: Bird Marketing (Client Assessment)    My Role: SEO Executive (Technical Focus) - Application Candidate    Target Asset: [https://assessment.birdmarketing.co.uk/]    Audit Suite: Screaming Frog SEO Spider, Google PageSpeed Insights, W3C Nu HTML Checker    Key Impact: Technical Diagnostic | Core Web Vitals Remediation Plan | W3C Code Validation | AEO/GEO AI Search Strategy

Executive Summary

Tasked with auditing Bird Marketing's mock website for public organic indexing and competitive search ranking as part of my role assessment, I conducted a comprehensive technical SEO audit, performance diagnostic, and code validation. Utilizing industry-standard tools—Screaming Frog, PageSpeed Insights, and the Nu HTML Checker—I evaluated the site across speed, crawlability, indexability, accessibility, security, and HTML compliance.

The assessment revealed critical performance bottlenecks, including an unacceptable mobile Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) of 46.1 seconds, render-blocking CSS/JS bundles, missing alt attributes, security header deficits, and erroneous noindex directives blocking organic discovery. I engineered a prioritized technical remediation roadmap alongside a forward-looking Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) strategy to capture high-intent AI search traffic.

The Technical Baseline: Performance & Core Web Vitals

Given that mobile devices drive over 52% of global search traffic (Statista, 2026), the audit prioritized mobile-first performance as the baseline for user perception and search ranking.

Deep-Dive Technical SEO & Code Audit Findings

An in-depth crawl of the website's 88 internal URLs using Screaming Frog and W3C Nu HTML Checker uncovered several high-severity technical errors impacting indexing, security, and accessibility:

[ Crawl Diagnostics: 88 Internal URLs ]
   ├── Indexability: 61 Indexable (77.2%) | 18 Non-Indexable / Noindex (22.8%)
├── HTML Validation: 14 URLs (17.7%) contain invalid tags in <head>
├── Media & Alt Text: 52.2% missing alt text | 26.1% missing alt attributes
   └── Security Headers: 94.9% missing HSTS, X-Frame, & Content-Security Headers

Technical Issue Matrix & Action Plan

Observed Finding

Technical & Search Impact

Remediation Action

Crawlability & Indexing

14 URLs (18.67%) flagged with 'noindex' directives.

Prevents core landing pages from appearing in organic search engine results (SERP).

Audit WordPress CMS settings and remove erroneous 'noindex' meta tags from public pages.

DOM & Head Syntax

14 URLs (17.72%) contained invalid HTML elements in <head> (e.g., stray start tags, CSS parse errors).

Causes search engine parsers to misinterpret meta tags and break indexing logic.

Cleanse HTML source code, remove redundant JS type attributes, and fix broken <head> tags.

Accessibility & ARIA

Invalid ARIA roles and 52.17% missing image alt text.

Impairs screen readers; deprives search engines of visual context for SERP image ranking.

Update image alt text across all media; re-align ARIA roles to accessibility standards.

Security & Mixed Content

HTTP internal links and missing HTTP Security Headers across 94.94% of URLs.

Triggers browser security warnings, degrading user trust and search authority.

Force HTTPS redirects; implement HSTS, X-Content-Type-Options, and X-Frame-Options headers.

Browser Console Errors

Broken local images and unauthenticated external BugHerd scripts.

Generates execution errors, increasing page processing overhead and bounce rates.

Replace broken media paths; authenticate or strip obsolete third-party tracking scripts.

Core Web Vitals & Caching

Short 7-day cache expiration and uncompressed media files.

Forces repeat visitors to re-download heavy assets, degrading mobile load speed.

Convert images to WebP/AVIF, set font-display: swap, and extend browser cache TTL.

Technical Remediation Roadmap

To systematically resolve these deficiencies, I structured a three-phase optimization workflow:

Phase 1: Code & Security Fixes ──► Phase 2: Performance & Speed ──► Phase 3: Content & Indexing
  1. Phase 1: Critical Code & Security Hygiene (Immediate)

    • Resolve invalid HTML elements in <head> and repair syntax errors (e.g., illegal characters in tel: attributes).

    • Enforce HTTPS across all internal assets to eliminate mixed-content flags.

    • Add essential HTTP security headers across server configurations.

  2. Phase 2: Core Web Vitals & Mobile Optimization (Weeks 1–2)

    • Compress static image/video assets into modern WebP/AVIF formats and enforce strict width/height attributes.

    • Defer non-critical JavaScript execution and eliminate unused CSS bundles above the fold.

    • Preload critical LCP image resources while disabling lazy-loading for above-the-fold hero media.

    • Extend browser cache TTL based on user return cycles monitored via Google Analytics (GA4).

  3. Phase 3: Search Accessibility & Indexation Verification (Weeks 2–3)

    • Remove erroneous noindex headers across primary service pages.

    • Populate descriptive, keyword-relevant alt attributes across all site images.

    • Fix non-discernible anchor links and establish proper heading element hierarchies (H1 $\rightarrow$ H6).

    • Re-run Screaming Frog, PageSpeed Insights, and Search Console validation crawls to verify zero critical errors.

Strategic Search Opportunity: AI & Generative Engine Optimization (AEO / GEO)

Beyond resolving technical foundations, I formulated an advanced organic growth strategy targeting Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO):

  • Targeting Buyer-Intent Long-Tail Queries: Transition from broad keyword stuffing to answering highly specific, problem-based B2B buyer questions.

  • Structured Data & Schema Architecture: Implement structured FAQ, Organization, and Service Schema markup to provide AI search algorithms (e.g., Google Search Generative Experience, Perplexity, ChatGPT) with clear, extractable entity context.

  • E-E-A-T Content Publishing: Build a regular publishing engine featuring research-led white papers, client case studies, and industry trend reports to establish domain authority and earn citation in generative AI summaries.

Key Competencies Demonstrated

  • Technical SEO & Crawl Analysis: Performing deep-dive audits using Screaming Frog to identify indexability, canonical, and header anomalies.

  • Core Web Vitals & Front-End Performance Optimization: Diagnosing render-blocking scripts, LCP latency, and mobile throttling issues using PageSpeed Insights.

  • W3C Code Validation & Web Standards: Identifying HTML syntax errors, invalid <head> structures, and ARIA accessibility mismatches.

  • AEO / GEO Strategy: Aligning technical metadata, structured data, and content architecture with modern AI search engine retrieval models.
